The Indigenous Art Market is the first event of its kind in Victoria, showcasing the work of more than 100 indigenous artists from all over the country and representing art collectives from as far away as the Tiwi Islands.
Live Painting Demonstrations
11am & 2pm, Friday and Saturday
Andrew Malibirr, Chairperson of Bula’bula Arts and his son Quintin Malibirr will demonstrate the intricate rarrk technique used by Yolngu people in Northern Territory, particularly in Arnhem Land. Artists use the weight of the paint soaked in the fine brush to delicately produce fine, straight lines. Traditionally, differing crosshatched layering of lines and shapes can give identity and ownership to specific Yolngu groups. As well as the pattern containing deep cultural significance, the patterns can represent wind, water, brilliance, energy and power to ancestral designs.
